Drain and disconnect

Your BOXT-accredited engineer will arrive at your home, and start by safely draining, disconnecting, and removing your existing boiler.

System flush

The heating system is flushed to eliminate rust and sludge from within the pipes or radiators, ensuring your new boiler operates as efficiently as possible.

New boiler installation

The new boiler is installed in your chosen location, and may require new pipework and wiring, which will be fitted by your engineer.

Test and commission

Your engineer will carry out specific tests to ensure the boiler’s safe operation and then explain its controls. Following the installation, BOXT's remote auditing team will assess each element to ensure it meets our high standards.

Activate warranty

After the installation is complete, BOXT's internal team will activate your boiler's warranty. All related documents are then uploaded to the app for your future reference.

The exact amount you’ll pay for your boiler will depend on the size of your home and how many people live there, as well as other factors such as what type of system you require and if you want your new boiler installing in a different location.

There are several boiler grants available, depending on your location in the UK:

The ECO4 Scheme provides low-income and vulnerable households with funds for energy-efficient home improvements. Additionally, grants are available for homeowners and private tenants to cover the costs of insulation, new heating systems, or solar panels if their home has an EPC rating of D or lower. This scheme ends in March 2026.

The LA Flex scheme offers free or subsidised home energy efficiency solutions to individuals or families who don't receive state benefits but are classified as vulnerable, have a low income, or have specific health conditions. Contact your local council for an eligibility assessment. This scheme ends in March 2026.

The NEST boiler scheme offers free advice and energy efficiency improvements, like new boilers, to individuals and families in Wales. To be eligible, you must reside in a low-income household or have health conditions that are exacerbated by the cold. This scheme currently has no end date.

As a general rule, a boiler can be fitted between six hours to four days. The length of the installation will depending on a number of factors.

1. The type of system/boiler you currently have
2. The type of system/boiler you want installing
3. The type of fuel being used
4. Whether the boiler needs relocating
5. The type and size of boiler you are installing

The quickest boiler installation process happens when a combi boiler is replaced with a new combi boiler. This is because the setup is already in place, with most likely only minor adjustments required to the pipework. A combi boiler swap should take a qualified engineer around 6 hours to complete, but we recommend allowing for a full day to complete an installation should any unforeseen issues arise.

If you wish to relocate your boiler, you can expect this to take around another half a day to complete, taking around a day and half to install a new boiler and relocate it.

If you have a system or a conventional boiler and are planning to change this to a combi boiler, it will take a bit longer to change the boiler because there will be tanks to remove and new pipework to be fitted. On average, a system to a combi boiler swap should take around 2 days to complete.

The Approved Code of Practice HSE Safety Regulations says that in order for a person to be viewed as ‘competent’ at installing a boiler, a person must do the following:

Complete a recognised training course followed by a completed assessment
Is either currently registered or has past experience being registered where they can prove competence

You must have received training in relation to:

Water and electricity
The potential exposure to asbestos
All possible dangers
How to take the necessary precautions

This depends on the type of boiler in your home to be disconnected and the new boiler you wish to have installed.

All engineers must be Gas Safe registered and have an active Gas Safe ID card. As part of this qualification, your engineer will hold an industry-standard qualification, like a Level 3 Certificate in Domestic Gas Installation and Maintenance, as well as a CCN1 (Core Gas Safety) certificate. They may also have a Diploma in Plumbing and Heating, as well as an electrical qualification.

For central heating boilers, a CENWAT (Central Heating Boilers and Water Heaters) certification is required. Additionally Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) qualifications may be required to allow work commonly on Parkhome installations or rural properties.

While oil boiler engineers must be OFTEC registered and hold an installation certification, such as OFT105E, as well as OFT101 for servicing and commissioning, and OFT600a for fuel storage and supply systems.

Modern boilers are designed to last and are significantly more energy-efficient than older models, which is reflected in their long manufacturer-backed warranties.
