Your complete guide to the OLEV grant for electric car chargers
You can get a government grant of up to £350 off the cost of an electric car charger and its installation through the Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV). This complete guide will tell you what the EVHS grant is, how you can claim it and what you need to be eligible.
If you purchase an electric car charger through BOXT, we’ll take all the hassle out of claiming the grant - from working out if you’re eligible through to handling all the paperwork and the claim process. All of our electric vehicle charging installers are OLEV approved, so you can rest assured that you are in safe hands.
How do I know if I am eligible?
To be eligible for the grant, you must:
- Have purchased, ordered or leased a full electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle after 1st October 2016. If you have leased your vehicle, you must lease the vehicle for at least six 6 months
- Have off-street parking at your property (for example, a garage, driveway or car port)
- Have the charger installed no more than 4 months ahead of the date you become the registered keeper of the vehicle
- Have the charger installed at a UK address
- Have less than two existing approved grant claims at your address
To check your eligibility, use our find an electric vehicle charger tool.
Which vehicles are eligible for the grant?
Most electric vehicles are eligible for the grant, however there are a few exceptions.
Are the chargers that BOXT sell eligible for the grant?
We make it clear which chargers are eligible for the grant during the purchase process. You’ll see the correct pricing based on whether you and the charger are eligible.
Since July 2019, all OLEV approved chargers must be smart enabled. We have carefully selected our product line to make sure you can get grant approved chargers, whilst future-proofing your purchase.
How do I claim the grant?
We’ll work out whether you are likely to be eligible for the grant through the purchase journey with BOXT. If you are eligible, we will apply this discount to your order and you’ll only pay the remaining balance.
Before your installation, we then ask you to provide a few photos to make sure everything will go smoothly on the day. If you have an OLEV grant discount, we’ll also ask you to provide proof of purchase for your vehicle (or equivalent if leasing or using a company car), as we need this when we claim the grant through OLEV.
During your installation, your engineer will run through the necessary paperwork with you so that we can then claim the grant on your behalf. You'll need your Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for this. If your vehicle is on order, you'll need an order, reference or enquiry number.
Then it’s time to relax and enjoy your new charger. We take care of the rest - sending all the required documentation to OLEV to claim the grant. The final decision can take up to 2 months, so please be patient. Once received, we’ll let you know the outcome. On some occasions, OLEV may ask you to provide additional supporting documentation, such as a land registry certificate.
Despite doing all we can to ensure you are approved for the grant, we cannot guarantee that this will be the case. If this happens, we will be in touch to discuss your options with you.
